Artist’s Statement
“The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper.”
William Butler Yeats
I always find inspiration from nature. I am enthralled by the changing colors, complex details, infinite variety and sheer wonder of the natural world. I never tire of observing and interpreting the dazzling beauty around me.
Playing with color, shapes, angles and patterns in these interpretations, I hope to find a balance between the purest truths in nature and the particular, unique voice with which nature speaks to me.
My art is guided by ideas that capture my imagination and speak to my fascination with wildness and instinctive powers. Images of birds, from songbirds to raptors, the bond between humans and animals and an exploration of the relationship of all living things to the earth are themes that weave throughout my work. While some of my paintings spring from my imagination, others are more realistic depictions of what I’ve observed, photographed and love.
I have been greatly influenced by Navajo and Apache artists with whom I spent time in the summer of 1996. Their art is fully informed by belief, culture and environment. These connections are so interwoven that one cannot be separated from the others and as a result, the work has integrity, purpose and deep personal meaning.
I wish that my work can also convey that which is most important to me…. My reverence for the natural world.
