I discovered the beauty and graceful form of Queen Palm frond bases shortly after I retired from teaching art. One day while visiting family in Arizona, I took an early morning walk and came upon dozens of palm frond bases that had blown from trees during an overnight storm. Fascinated by their sculptural form, I gathered them up, and sent them back to NY where I used them for several years as “canvasses” upon which to express my ideas.
My first series on Palm, the Heads of State, naturally sprang from the mask-like form of the Palm. I loved the freedom of using a wide variety of media on each piece to express the uniqueness of that particular form and spirit. So with this series, there are images brought forth with paint, metal, oil pens, feathers, ribbons and beads…… anything and everything I could imagine!
All Heads of State are Mixed Media on Palm. Dimensions vary.
